Shoutout to Western Jaguar

I’ve known Jeff as an artist for a pretty good while now. Western Jaguar is a guy that knows his craft, and knows it well. His new single Pity Party just dropped last Friday and it’s a good listen. You should check it out here. Western Jaguar isn’t on my label, so why am I talking about him? I’ve gotten this question a couple of times and I want to go into that very shortly before we get into his review.

Abrasive Monologues isn’t just for me. It’s not just about me. It’s a platform that I’ve got a lot of hours in, that has been purpose built to help uplift the indie community as a whole. I will be the first to tell you that… I don’t like every artist in the indie space. That’s okay, because not everyone will like everything they hear. Just because it doesn’t strike my fancy doesn’t mean it’s not amazing to someone, or that it doesn’t have a fan base. That’s why I’ve looped in multiple writers. We all have different tastes and I want this platform to benefit everyone. I’ll go into that in more detail in a later post.

Why I Love this Review

I’m a huge fan of honesty. As an indie artist, a mixer, a producer that’s just starting out, you’re going to consume a ton of terrible advice. It’s just a fact. Terrible advice is out there and readily available. The SM7B is going to be a large part of that. You’re going to hear how it’s the best mic, that it’s made with unicorn sweat and will make you better.

What you need to understand is that it is a great microphone, but its not necessarily better than any other. It has a purpose, and a use case, which may or may not apply to you. It’s a dynamic microphone, which means it can take more of a beating with volume spikes than a condenser before you get clipping… That’s it. It is sensitive enough to have similar clarity to a condenser, so guess what else is it sensitive enough to pick up? Room echoes and reflections. Treatment still matters as much as it always did, and most importantly as you’ll hear in West jag’s review… So does your performance. His vocal takes were good from the beginning. That’s what you should be aiming for most of all. The microphone records what it hears.
